A cleaning company I know registered premiumcleaningserviceskigali.com. Try saying that out loud. Now try fitting it on a business card. Now try remembering it after hearing it once at a networking event. Exactly.
Your domain name is your digital address. It appears on business cards, email signatures, invoices, vehicle wraps, and every Google search result. Choose carefully — changing it later is painful.
The golden rules
- Keep it short — under 15 characters if possible. Every extra character increases the chance of typos
- Make it pronounceable — if you can say it on the phone without spelling it out, it’s good
- Match your business name — if your business is Inyange Industries, your domain should be inyange.rw — not inyange-industries-rwanda.com
- Avoid hyphens and numbers — “best-clean-4-u.com” screams amateur. Clean, simple, no special characters
- Choose the right extension — .rw for Rwanda-focused, .com for international reach. Ideally register both
What if your name is taken?
First, check both .com and .rw. Often one is available when the other isn’t. If both are taken:
- Try adding a short qualifier: gokisimenti.com instead of kisimenti.com
- Use your location: inyangekigali.rw
- Don’t add random numbers or hyphens — they make your domain forgettable
- Consider whether the taken domain is actually in use. If it’s parked (showing ads), you might be able to buy it
To abbreviate or not?
Generally: don’t. krs.rw is short but meaningless. kigalirepairshop.rw is longer but immediately clear. The exception is if your abbreviation is already well-known: MTN, BK, RDB work as domains because the abbreviations are already the brand.
Test before you commit
Before registering:
- Say it out loud to five people. Can they remember it after one hearing?
- Write it down. Does it look weird or is there an unintended word inside it? (Therapist finder = therapistfinder — read that again)
- Search it on Google. Is a very similar domain already established? You don’t want to be confused with them
- Check social media. Is the matching handle available on Instagram and Twitter?
A domain costs RWF 15,000–35,000/year. Through services like Kisimenti, domain registration is often included free with yearly plans. The domain itself is cheap — the decision of which domain to register is what’s worth your time.
